Test principle
In the detection of ascorbic acid Tillmann's reagent is discoloured.The colour changes from grey blue to orange.
Sensitivity        
Display:  +  =  10 mg/dl  (0,57 mmol/l) Ascorbic acid
   ++  =  20 mg/dl  (1,14 mmol/l) Ascorbic acid
Clinical Significance
The test is used:
  • To identify alimentary and medicinal ascorburia.
  • To diagnose a vitamin C deficiency
(Elimination test: the patient with an empty stomach is given 10 mg ascorbic acid/kg body mass, the urine passed during the following 6 hours is collected and examined for ascorbic acid). A healthy person eliminates 10% and more of the dose given within the period of 6 hours.
  • To identify disorders due to high concentrations of ascorbic acid in the tests blood and glucose
High concentrations of ascorbic acid reduces the sensitivity of the blood and glucose tests.
