Urine Diagnostics / Urine Test Strips / Portfolio Urine Test Strips / pH-Value

Test principle
The pH test pad contains a mixed indicator, which gives a colour spectrum from orange to yellow to turquoise for the pH range 5-9.
Source of error
If the urine is left to stand too long, bacterial contamination can lead to false results (alkaline, pH > 7). Proteins do not have any influence. See also chapter "sources of error".
Clinical significance
The pH value of urine is influenced by a range of factors:

  • Nutrition
    - Animal protein causes acidic urine,
    - Vegetable diet causes alkaline urine
  • Various diseases (especially urinary tract infections)
  • Medicines
  • Metabolic situation
Highly alkaline urine can give false positive protein test results. High pH values can cause lysis of the erythrocytes and leukocytes, this can cause positive results in the strip test but negative results in the sediment examination.

The pH value of fresh urine of healthy persons varies between pH 5 and 6. A persistent alkaline pH value indicates urinary tract infections.
